Our journey began in 1977, when Alberto Cafferata, Expedition Leader and co-founder of Aktivamos, embarked on his inaugural 4-day Santa Cruz trek. Equipped only with determination and a passion for exploration—still a school student at the time—he was driven by the thrill of uncovering what lay beyond the mountains. This philosophy of seeking distant horizons and embracing challenging adventures became the foundation of his career. In 1992, Alberto founded Pony’s Expeditions, dedicated to providing unique experiences for travellers eager to discover Peru’s hidden trails, pristine lakes, and breathtaking landscapes. His pioneering spirit led him to reopen the Huayhuash circuit in 1993, a path that had been closed for nearly 12 years, marking the first exploration of the famed Siula Pass in decades. The following years were marked by remarkable achievements:

• In 1994, he completed the Alpamayo Full Loop trek, visiting every lake along the route.
• By 1995, he had traversed the Salkantay and Ausangate trails, along with the legendary Inka Trail.

Throughout these adventures, a commitment to innovation and cultural and environmental responsibility became integral to his mission. In 2017, Alberto transitioned from Pony’s Expeditions to focus on more personalized experiences, emphasizing culinary and cultural engagement and moving away from large group travel. Now, in 2021, Aktivamos was born—a new venture designed for a new kind of traveller. Alberto and Sophie, co-founders, both aim to offer more intimate and personalized programs that celebrate the beauty of Peru, ensuring that each journey is not just a trip, but a meaningful adventure that connects you to the heart and soul of this incredible land.
